House Bill 2244, enacted by the legislature earlier this year, modified the definition of a public record for the purposes of retention and disposition to make it technology independent. This modification of the public records law takes effect in January, 2012. 

The Secretary of State’s Archives Division will begin offering training on what the new definition will mean for state and local government agencies. The training will cover how the new definition is applied and how it works with technology. In addition, state agencies will be instructed on the policies and procedures requirements of the new law.

These trainings will also be made available online at after the first of the year.
